RIC Hearing Aids

Receiver-In-Canal

The RIC style is the most popular style of hearing aid. The sound processor sits neatly behind your ear and a thin wire attaches it to a speaker in your ear canal. The speaker is anchored with a comfy silicon ‘dome’ or a custom-made ear mould. This style is exceptionally discreet, suits a wide range of hearing challenges and delivers the best sound quality. It is also very robust. Should any parts eventually break down, most of these can be easily replaced by your Audiologist. The RIC style is available in both rechargeable and disposable-battery versions.

BTE Hearing Aids

Behind-The-Ear

A BTE is a preferred option for some people that have chronic ear infections. If your hearing loss is very severe we might recommend a special Super Power BTE for you, because it is more powerful than a RIC. In a BTE, all the electronics are housed behind your ear and the sound is delivered to your ear via a thin tube and dome, or a thicker tube and custom ear mould.

ITE/ITC Hearing Aids

In-The-Ear / In-The Canal

These two types of hearing aids are very similar. ITE is a bit bigger than ITC and can accommodate more extra parts. These are known as “custom” styles because the whole device is custom made for your ear and sits in your ear. It is a common misconception that ITE’s and ITC’s are more discreet than over-the-ear styles like the RIC. The opposite is in fact true! They can also be more susceptible to breaking down because all the electronics sit in the warm damp environment of the ear canal.

CIC/IIC Hearing Aids

Completely-in-Canal / Invisible-In-Canal

The CIC and IIC are smaller than the ITC. The CIC sits in your ear canal and is visible just at the entrance. The IIC sits deeper in the ear canal and in some ears is completely invisible. It sounds ideal, but there are some compromises. To fit into a smaller space we have to do away with some of the noise reduction features and the option to connect your hearing aids to your phone. These devices use smaller batteries, which don’t last as long, and require a good level of dexterity to manage.
